EWS/DB Schenker : The largest UK railfreight company, EWS (originally EW&S) was a purchase of several of the ex BR owned freight operations by a consortium led by the Wisconsin Central railroad. WC was taken over by Canadian National in 2001 and they sold EWS to Deutsche Bahn in 2007. In 2009 DB rebranded their freight operations under the name DB Schenker.

Freightliner : The modern company Freightliner dates from a 1995 management buyout of the former BR operation by the same name. The original business was container traffic from ports which is still a major part of their operations, but they have diversified into other freight traffic including Aggregates, Cement and Engineers traffic via their "Freightliner Heavyhaul" brand.

GB Railfreight : GB Railfreight was created as part of GB Railways in 1999, the company was purchased by First Group in 2003 and eventually was known as First GB Railfreight for a time. In June 2010 the company was sold by First Group to Eurotunnel's railfreight arm Europorte.

Mendip Rail : Mendip Rail was created as a joint venture in 1993 by ARC (now Hanson Aggregates) and Foster Yeoman (now Aggregate Industries) to combine the companies rail operations to reduce costs and increase productivity. MRL operates 8 class 59 loco's, four class 59/0 ex Foster Yeoman and 4x class 59/1 ex ARC, plus a large wagon fleet. The company uses EWS/DB Schenker drivers and further loco resources are leased in from EWS as needed.
